Questions

What families ask us

How does admissions work?

You visit, you apply in the winter, and every family hears back in March. The admissions page lists each step and the months they fall in.

When are the open houses and visits?

There is an open house in early November, and visit days run most Tuesdays from October to March. The key dates are on the admissions page.

Can we visit before we apply?

Yes. A visit is a morning at the back of a room, and a talk with the head of school afterward. Children are welcome to come along.

What is a work cycle?

It is a long, uninterrupted stretch of the morning when each child chooses work from the shelves, alone or with a few others, while the guides give short lessons. Children plan the morning first, and each keeps a record of what they did.

What happens when a child moves up a room?

Around age nine, when the guides and the family agree it is time, a child starts spending mornings in the upper room and then moves over. The two rooms share a yard, so the older children are not strangers.

How big are the classes?

Each room has a class size on the program matrix, with the adults in the room. The head of school can tell you the numbers for this year at a visit.

Is there care before and after school?

Yes, on every school day, and it is open to children from either room. It is billed apart, by the month, for the days a family uses.

What about lunch and phones?

Families send lunch, and the school provides a snack. Children keep phones at home or in a bag in the office until dismissal.

How do tuition and financial aid work?

Tuition is set by the year and the room, and the school gives its figures at a visit. Financial aid is available; the tuition page explains how to apply.

How do the guides talk with families?

Guides write to families every few weeks about what the room is working on, and meet each family in the fall and the spring. Any parent may ask for a call in between.

Still have a question?

Write to the office, or ask on a visit day.
